I. Line printer parameter settings in RASv2.

I.1. Initialization file TIM.INS

In RASv2, the printer specification is set in the initialization file TIM.INS, in line 14, by entering the proper number, which characterises the chosen line printer and its printing resolution. This compound numerical parameter is defined in TIM user manual (Chapter 7 - TIM Reference, "PRINTER SUPPORT", No 119, p 132). It can be set in line 14 of TIM.INS.

For practical purpose, the parameters to used are :

10 HP LaserJet type 150 dpi Low resolution
11 HP LaserJet type 300 dpi High resolution

39 Epson 24-pin type 180 dpi Low resolution
40 Epson 24-pin type 360 dpi High resolution

The files TIMFGPLQ.INS and TIMFGPHP.INS in the \TIMRAS directory are example of TIM.INS files for PCVision Plus board and for type 39 and type 11 printers. At the DOS prompt you can copy the chosen one to TIM.INS to have the desired setting :

COPY TIMFGPLQ.INS TIM.INS for EPSON 24-pin 180 dpi
COPY TIMFGPHP.INS TIM.INS for HP LaserJet 300 dpi

Please note that type 40 cannot be used with all EPSON 24-pin LQ printers. Check with the printer manufacturer.

Printer channel (logical port) can also be set in line 16 (see TIM user manual).

I.2. Changing setting within RASv2

Within the RASv2 program, it is possible to change the printer setting by selecting in the menu "ToolBox" the item "Printer Output - Manual & Set-up" (RASv2 menu 7.83).

Then press 1 for "Select printer type", then select the lowercase letter corresponding to your printer (b or c for EPSON 24-pin type, and g or h for HP LaserJet type). Come back to RASv2 menus by pressing Esc and then "0".

There are several other features in this option, which should carefully be tested first.

Here the printer choice is valid only for the session. If you quit RASv2 and start it again, the printer will be set by the value of the parameter in TIM.INS.

This way of choosing a printer type can be handy, by is not recommended as a usual procedure.

I.3. Changing setting with the SET command in TIM

Quitting RASv2 for TIM (only if TIM is in its full interactive version) by choosing "Exit", then "TIM" (RASv2 menu 0.2), we are now at the TIM> prompt.

The command SET (TIM user manual Chapter 7 - TIM Reference, "SET", No 142, p 158) enables to see some of the setting parameters and eventually modify them. The printer parameter is at entry 6.

The new value cannot be stored definitively .

I.4. Changing setting with the I command in TIM

Quitting RASv2 for TIM (only if TIM is in its full interactive version) by choosing "Exit", then "TIM" (RASv2 menu 0.2), we are now at the TIM> prompt.

The command I, (uppercase i) (TIM user manual Chapter 7 - TIM Reference, "I", No 71, p 80) enables to see some of the setting parameters and eventually modify them. The printer parameter is at entry 14.

The new value can be definitively stored in TIM.INS by entering "s"; otherwise press Esc.

II. Line printer parameter settings in GRAPH_3D.

II.1.Definition file GRAPH11.DEF

In GRAPH_3D, the line printer parameter setting is stored in the ASCII file GRAPH11.DEF. It should not be modified there, as editing mistakes can lead to functional problems of the program.

II.2. Set printer option

The best way to modify the setting is through the "Set printer" option (GRAPH_3D menu 1.8). In this option, the printer LPT port , the printer type and the printer resolution can be set. Press F1 to obtain the required help on this option.

The standard printer port is LPT1.

Choice 2 for EPSON 24-pin type printer
Choice 3 for HP LaserJet type printer format US letter
Choice 4 for HP LaserJet type printer format A4

Choice L for lower printing resolution
Choice H for Higher printing resolution

Please note that type 2 with High resolution cannot be used with all EPSON 24-pin printer. Check with the printer manufacturer.

The printer parameters are display in the GRAPH_3D status window in the main GRAPH_3D menu. (bottom left).

If the program GRAPH_3D is quitted normally (by Alt-q), the modified printer parameter values will be saved in the GRAPH11.DEF for use in the next session. Otherwise it will not be saved, and the previous setting will remain.
